Welcome to the web
site of the Crosskeys Welfare Bowls Club.
For the 2010 Bowls Season the Crosskeys
Welfare
Bowls Club, I think I can safely say, are looking forward to
the
coming
season with relish,
and to improve upon their placing in the MBA and South Mon leagues, as
they done so well last season,
dispite all the troubles the weather
brought.
This being our 89th year
since foundation, in
1921. The Committee Members are looking to celebrate our 90th
Anniversary
next
year in 2011, and plans are well advanced; "allegedly".
Background
This club was first established in 1921,
and
remains at it's initial location at Waunfawr Park, Crosskeys,
near Newport. For
those who need to find us, just pop in
the post code
of NP11 7PF into you Sat Nav and you will end up on the road to the
Park. Drive up
or down it and you will see the park and its bowls green from
the
road. Find a safe place to park and come
and join
us.
Whilst the
club house has changed over the years,
the current club house remains the property of the bowls club; the
green
is maintained by
Caerphilly Borough Council. For
people interested in the rich local history of the village and local
area with
its
coal mining history, and a wide selection of photographs, of the old
Crosskeys and new, visit www.crosskeys.me.uk
The
club house has recently been
refurbished and is known by the team as the "mecca", where a friendly
social atmosphere
pervades after the serious business of the game of
bowls has concluded, one way or the other.
Crosskeys
Bowls club are proud to
have won the Monmouthshire Bowling
Association (MBA) Division 2 Championship in 2006
(Team Photo above)
and promotion to the MBA Division 1 for the 2007
season.
They are keen and eager to remain in the
first
division.
The team enjoys the game of
bowls in a
more sedate, graceful and social manner, as
befits gentlemen of their stature. They
are looking forward to
the 2010 Bowls Season and hope to do well, as a prelude to their 90th
Anniversary Season next year
in
2011.
Honors
within the club go to the
rink that won the Monmouthshire Bowling Association County Rink
Competition (the
County 4's) in the Season
2007 and again in 2008. They were runners-up in this
competion in
the 2009 Season.
A very special Honour goes to to a young
man, aged
just 20 at the time, who won the County under 25's and also won
the Welsh
Singles Open
Competition in the 2009 Season. Congratulations to Mr Tom
Hanks.
He was also selected and played for
the the Welsh National Side in
the Under 25 International matches, and
is off to New Zealand later this year to represent
Wales at the
International
level in the World Champion of Champions. Well
done to them all and good luck for the 2010
season.
A very special "Thank you" goes to the
Ladies who
always provides our most excellent buffets and to the Gentlemen who
help
behind the bar and the upkeep of the
Clubhouse.
The club
is always looking for,
and welcoming new talent, old or new to
the game, and offers a warm welcome to prospective
club members who
would like to enjoy both a good game of bowls and an entertaining
social life.
I must also add a big thank you to our
sponsors, for
their generosity and support, for seasons past and seasons yet to come.
The "webmaster" wishes both the team as
a whole, and
all the individual bowlers, all the best for their endevours this
coming
season.
For the visitors I wish you all a very warm and hospitable welcome and
a very enjoyable game of bowls at the
"mecca", Crosskeys Welfare Bowls Club,
seeing as I am also the Vice Captain for this Season. What ever next?
