INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the web
site of the Crosskeys Welfare Bowls Club and the Crosskeys Over 60's
Bowls Club. For the 2009 Bowls
Season the Crosskeys Welfare
Bowls Club are unable to support an Over Sixties Bowls Team.
However, the main team are
looking forward to the coming season with relish,
and to improve upon their placing in the MBA and South Mon leagues.
Background
This club was first established in 1921, and
remains at it's initial location at Waunfawr Park, Crosskeys,
near Newport. Whilst the
club house has changed over the years,
the current club house remains the property of the bowls club; the
green is
maintained by Caerphilly Borough Council. For
people interested in the rich local history of the village and local
area with is
coal mining history, and a wide selection of photographs, of the old
Crosskeys and new, visit www.crosskeys.me.uk
The
club house has recently been
refurbished and is known by the team as the "mecca", where a friendly
social atmosphere
pervades after the serious business of the game of
bowls has concluded, one way or the other.
Crosskeys Bowls club are proud to
have won the Monmouthshire Bowling
Association (MBA) Division 2 Championship in 2006
(Team Photo above)
and promotion to the MBA Division 1 for the 2007 season.
They are keen and eager to remain in the
first division finishing in
7th position in the 2008 season, after a difficult start to that
year.
The
Over 60's team enjoy a less stressful game of bowls than the MBA team
and play bowls in a more sedate, graceful and
social manner, as
befits gentlemen of their stature. They were looking forward to
the 2009 Bowls Season but are
unfortunately unable to muster a team for the
forthcoming Season.
Honors within the club go to the
rink that won the Monmouthshire Bowling Association County Rink
Competition (the
County 4's)
last season 2007 and again in 2008. Another honor goes to those
who won the
Monmouthshire Pairs and
were the finalists at the Welsh
National
Outdoor Pairs, Ian Slade and Tom Hancock. Finally one young man
was selected and played for
the the National Side in the Under 25 International matches - Tom
Hancock. Well
done to them all.
A very special "Thank you" goes to the Ladies who
provide our most excellent buffets and to the Gentlemen who help behind
the bar and the upkeep of the
Clubhouse.
The club is always looking for,
and welcoming new talent, old or new to
the game, and offers a warm welcome to prospective
club members who
would like to enjoy both a good game of bowls and an entertaining
social life.
The webmaster wishes both the team as a whole, and
all the individual bowlers, all the best for their endevours this
coming season.
For the visitors I wish you all a very warm and hospitable welcome and
a very enjoyable game of bowls at the
"mecca", Crosskeys Welfare Bowls Club.
