24th July 2018

It is with great sadness that we have to announce the passing last week of one of
our great members over the last decade namely Richard Preston or Dicky has most
of us new him.

Dicky joined the club back in 2008 following Jean and himself retiring from the
local watering hole The Crosskeys Hotel where they had been for some 12 years.
Dicky had started playing bowls during the winter of 2006 up at the Islwyn
indoor bowls club along with Ian Slade and some ex-rugby boys who frequented
the Cross. Having been a very good snooker player Dicky picked the game up very
easily and he always said when he retired he would join the Mecca boys.

Dicky quickly established himself has a regular lead in the 1st team and was
very competitive in a nice way when ever representing the club, he would very
often be seen pumping his fist and making the comment “in there like a dirty
shirt” which always brought a smile to all around. One of Dicky’s playing
highlights was partnering his old butty Ian Slade to win the South Mon pairs
title in 2012 in his hometown of Ynysddu or “The land of Love” has he would
often call it.

Dicky right from the start was always a great clubman and true worker for the club. In
2011 he decided to take on the club treasurers role which he along with Jean made it
their own and proved to be the most professional duo for the next 5 years until he got
struck down by this terrible illness. Another little quotation that always brought a
chuckle to all whilst he was serving “Its like an investment! The more you drink the more
you save”

Richard will be greatly missed by not only the members of Crosskeys Welfare Bowls Club
but by bowlers throughout Monmouthshire bowls who he had created good friendships
with during his short time in our game.

His funeral will be on Tuesday August 7th at 10.30am at the Crematorium, then back to the Philanthropic in Pontywaun for refreshments.

With the Opening Ceremony of the 2018 Commonwealth Games on Australia’s Gold Coast today, all at Crosskeys BC wish Paul Watkins all our very best in his role as TSO for the duration of the games. Paul is the sole Welsh TSO at the games – an honour richly deserved for the time Paul has put back into the sport.

We would also like to congratulate Paul on being elected as junior Vice President for the WBA for the second time.

12th September 2017

After enduring a difficult year in Division 1 of the MBA, it is great to reflect on some positive aspects of our club this season.

Over 60’s League

As a first year back in this league, it is a great achievement for our Team to finish a respectable third place. With more members looking to join next year, we hopefully look forward to consolidate our position within the league. Many thanks should be given to the tireless work of Mitch and Ted.
